STE expands its high-voltage, high-capacitance DC-link portfolio
STE NEWS
STE has launched a DC-link capacitor series for high-voltage, high-capacitance energy conversion.
Applications include photovoltaic inverters, wind-power converters, high-voltage frequency converters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), static var generators (SVG) and active power filters (APF).
STE’s DC-link capacitors use polypropylene film for energy buffering, voltage stabilization and filtering on the DC bus between a rectifier and an inverter.
Supporting the DC bus
Rectification and switching create voltage variation and ripple current on the bus. A DC-link capacitor stores and releases energy to help control that variation and support the inverter stage.
| Equipment | Circuit role |
|---|---|
| Photovoltaic inverters and wind-power converters | DC-bus support and filtering |
| High-voltage frequency converters and UPS systems | Energy buffering and bus-voltage stabilization |
| Static var generators (SVGs) and active power filters (APFs) | DC support in power conversion |
Start with the bus conditions
- Establish DC and transient voltage, then check temperature derating.
- Choose capacitance from the allowed voltage variation and energy requirement.
- Check ripple current, switching frequency, ESR and cooling conditions.
- Confirm package dimensions, lead spacing and installation.
Film and aluminum electrolytic capacitors have different electrical and mechanical characteristics. Any replacement needs a fresh review of capacitance, ripple, temperature and system performance.
