Selection guide

Choose X1 because the circuit and the equipment standard require its impulse class, not because the nominal AC voltage is high. Then select rated voltage, capacitance, pulse duty, humidity profile and the case and lead construction together.

  1. Confirm X1 across-the-line duty

Use X1 between supply conductors where the applicable equipment standard and impulse environment require the higher class. It is not a line-to-earth Y capacitor and cannot establish a protective insulation path.

  2. Select AC voltage and impulse margin

Choose 330–530 VAC for the approved construction. Compare the 4 kV / 24-pulse test sequence with the real surge waveform, repetition rate and source impedance. Proof and impulse tests are test conditions, not continuous ratings.

  3. Determine capacitance, losses and heating

Use the K or M tolerance and the tan δ condition, then calculate RMS current and self-heating for the actual spectrum. ESR/impedance, dV/dt and current data for switching or high-line filters are available on request.

  4. Match the THB test to service life

The THB test is 500 h at 85 °C / 85% RH and 240 VAC, with a capacitance-change limit only. The VDE approval grants no Annex I grade. The full report, post-test limits and mission-profile correlation are available on request.

  5. Specify geometry and process

Specify W/H/T, pitch, lead diameter and form and packing for each capacitance and voltage. For 37.5 mm parts, see the part drawing for capacitance values. Validate soldering, cleaning and coating; do not reflow-solder.

Design notes

X1 and X2 are not interchangeable

Both are across-the-line classes, but X1 is selected for the higher impulse category of the equipment environment. Confirm the system standard, overvoltage category and surge source before choosing the class.

The 4 kV impulse test is not an operating rating

The impulse test is one defined pulse sequence, not unlimited 4 kV operation. Switching edges, lightning combination-wave surges and repetitive spikes require waveform, source-impedance, dV/dt, current and thermal data.

No DC approval

The VDE approval includes no Annex H DC approval. DC-link or DC EMI-filter use needs a continuous DC voltage, ripple-current and lifetime rating; none is specified for this series.

THB test is not a lifetime rating

The 500 h, 85 °C / 85% RH test is an STE test; certificate 40054631 assigns no Annex I grade. For humid service, request the full test report and application-specific lifetime correlation.

Control heat and mechanical stress

Validate RMS current, self-heating, PCB spacing, lead forming, wave and hand soldering, cleaning and coating. Do not reflow-solder. Provide mechanical support for 37.5 mm parts.
