Start with the circuit position: Class X1 is an across-the-line class for higher impulse stress and is not interchangeable with X2 or Y capacitors. Then define the certified AC voltage, capacitance, surge and impulse requirements, body size, humidity profile and assembly process.
Use X1 across line conductors where the equipment standard and overvoltage category require its higher impulse class. Do not use it as a line-to-earth Y capacitor, and do not substitute X2 without checking insulation and surge requirements.
Select 330, 440, 480, 500 or 530 VAC and the approval marks the end equipment needs.
The 4 kV / 24-pulse impulse sequence is a test condition, not an application surge rating. Define waveform, source impedance, peak current and repetition for the equipment, and coordinate surge protection at equipment level.
Choose capacitance for the required EMI attenuation. Then verify losses, RMS and peak current, self-heating, derating over frequency and temperature, dry-heat life and humidity performance. The AC rating alone does not define any of these.
Specify W/H/T, pitch, lead diameter and form and packing for each capacitance and voltage. Use the soldering profile of the selected part, check PCB spacing and do not reflow-solder.
CQC, VDE/ENEC, IECEE CB and UL/cUL approvals cover MPK X1 capacitors from 1 nF to 1 µF at 330–530 VAC. The approvals include neither DC use (Annex H) nor an Annex I humidity grade.

Each certificate covers the types and ratings listed on it.
Initial characteristics cover dissipation factor, insulation resistance and voltage proof. Impulse and self-ignition test sequences are specified at 4 kV.
| Test | Condition | Acceptance |
|---|---|---|
| Impulse test | 4 kVDC · 24 pulses · 9 s charge / 2 s discharge | Test circuit, waveform and post-test limits on request |
| Self-ignition test | U~ = UR · Ui = 4.0 kV · 20 discharges per sample · 5 s interval | Test energy and pass criteria on request |
| Voltage proof | Terminal to terminal: 4.3 × UR DC, 5 s. Terminals to case: 2 × UR + 1,500 VAC, min. 2,000 VAC | Test duration and pass criteria on request |
Use between line conductors where the required impulse class and the equipment standard allow the part. An X1 capacitor is not a line-to-earth Y capacitor and does not replace reinforced insulation.
330–530 VAC is the certified continuous AC rating. The 4 kV impulse test is a test condition, not a continuous or repetitive rating. Coordinate installation category, mains transients and equipment surge tests with the impulse test circuit and acceptance criteria.
Design with tan δ versus frequency and temperature, RMS and peak current, ESR and thermal resistance of the selected part. Validate normal, brownout, harmonic and repetitive transient operation in the final enclosure.
This series has no biased 85/85 humidity rating, and its VDE approval includes no humidity grade. For humid environments, select MPK/X1-THB and design to its own ratings.
Specify body size, pitch, lead form, packing and soldering profile for each part number. Do not reflow-solder. Validate PCB spacing, cleaning, coating and vibration in the application.
