Selection guide

Start with the circuit position: Class X2 is for suppression between line conductors (L–N), not from line to earth. Then define the approved AC voltage, capacitance, continuous and transient current, hot-spot temperature, humidity profile and dimensions.

  1. Confirm the X2 circuit position

Use X2 between line conductors only where the equipment standard and overvoltage category allow Class X2. Do not use it from line to earth or across an isolation barrier in place of a Y capacitor.

  2. Match the AC voltage approval

Select 275, 305, 310, 330 or 350 VAC and the approval marks the end equipment needs.

  3. Define transient and discharge duty

Define the surge waveform, source impedance, repetition rate and discharge resistor of the equipment, and check them against the X2 impulse, dV/dt, peak-current and self-ignition data.

  4. Set capacitance, losses, current and mission profile

Choose capacitance for the required EMI attenuation. Then verify tan δ, RMS and peak current, ESR, self-heating, derating over frequency and temperature, endurance and humidity performance. The X2 rating alone does not qualify the part for dropper or pulse duty.

  5. Specify the mechanical and ordering data

Define voltage, capacitance, tolerance, W/H/T, pitch, lead diameter and form, packing and approval for each part number.

Approvals & reliability

Approvals & qualifications

Approvals cover MPX X2 capacitors from 1 nF to 10 µF at 275–350 VAC. The VDE approval includes neither an IEC 60384-14 Annex H (DC) approval nor an Annex I humidity grade.

Design notes

Use X2 between line conductors

Use for differential-mode suppression where Class X2 meets the equipment standard and overvoltage category. Do not use from line to earth: an X2 capacitor is not a Y capacitor and does not provide reinforced insulation.

Voltage rating is not a surge or current rating

The 275–350 VAC rating does not define peak current, dV/dt or surge capability. Check installation category, input transients, repetitive waveforms and the discharge path against the test data of the selected part.

Check losses and temperature rise, including dropper duty

Design with tan δ versus frequency and temperature, ESR, RMS and peak current, thermal resistance and voltage derating of the selected part. Validate normal, harmonic, brownout, surge and enclosure-temperature conditions.

No THB or DC rating

This series has no biased 85/85 humidity rating and no continuous DC rating; the VDE approval includes neither Annex I nor Annex H. For humid environments, select MPX/X2-THB and design to its own ratings.

Assembly

Specify body size, pitch, lead form, packing and soldering profile for each part number. Do not reflow-solder. Validate cleaning, coating and vibration in the application.
