STE SMD Varistors: Compact Size and High Surge Capability
STE NEWS
STE has expanded its SMD varistor range for designs that need compact packages and high surge-current capability.
STE has introduced molded MOV-3225 and MOV-4032 surface-mount varistors for circuits that need compact surge protection. Intended applications include power supplies, LED circuits, industrial equipment, appliances and network devices.
Package codes and physical dimensions
3225 and 4032 are package designations. Use the actual outline and recommended land pattern when allocating board space.
| Package code | Length × width × height |
|---|---|
| MOV-3225 | 8.60 × 6.30 × 4.60 mm |
| MOV-4032 | 10.70 × 8.20 × 4.60 mm |
The announced range spans 200–820 VDC varistor voltage and 130–510 VRMS maximum continuous AC operating voltage. These are separate parameters; consult the specification for the combination supported by each part.
Selecting a surge-protection part
- Check continuous operating voltage against the circuit voltage and expected supply variation.
- Compare surge waveform, peak current, repetition and energy with the part’s ratings.
- Check clamping voltage against the protected circuit’s allowable voltage.
- Confirm ambient temperature, package outline, land pattern and applicable approvals.
The surface-mount construction supports lower-profile layouts and SMT assembly. Protection performance also depends on board design and system testing.
