Selection guide

Start with the board-space constraint and the duty: filtering, timing or low pulse. Then check voltage, capacitance, frequency loss, pulse current, dielectric stability, temperature derating, self-heating of the compact body, lifetime and dimensions.

  1. Define waveform, stability and space constraints

Specify DC bias, AC ripple, frequency spectrum, peak voltage, rise and fall time, dV/dt, repetition rate, RMS current, allowed absorption or drift error, ambient temperature, board spacing, cooling and service hours.

  2. Select voltage and capacitance

Maximum capacitance depends on voltage: 63/100 VDC to 1 µF, 250 VDC to 150 nF, 400 VDC to 47 nF and 630 VDC to 15 nF. For higher values or other voltages, request the part specification.

  3. Calculate pulse, loss and self-heating

Use Ipk = C·dV/dt and the measured spectrum. Obtain dV/dt, repetitive and RMS current, ESR, impedance, self-resonance, thermal-resistance and hot-spot-rise data for the selected part number.

  4. Check derating and PET stability

Obtain the voltage–temperature derating curve before operation above +85 °C, together with dielectric absorption, capacitance and loss versus temperature and frequency, drift and loaded-life data.

  5. Confirm dimensions and assembly

Match the part number to voltage code, capacitance, tolerance, W/H/T, 5 mm lead spacing, lead form, packing, marking and soldering profile. Do not use reflow soldering; validate forming stress, cleaning, vibration and thermal cycling.

Design notes

Maximum capacitance depends on voltage

The 1 nF–1 µF range does not apply at every voltage. Keep 250 VDC at or below 150 nF, 400 VDC at or below 47 nF and 630 VDC at or below 15 nF unless the part specification states otherwise.

Compact size has thermal and electrical tradeoffs

A 5 mm boxed body saves board area but limits the thermal surface and changes winding geometry. Verify current, ESR, hot-spot rise and lifetime for the exact voltage and capacitance.

Quantify pulse and oscillator duty

Calculate I = C·dV/dt and obtain dV/dt, repetitive-current, frequency and temperature-rise limits for the part number before pulse or oscillator use.

Obtain the high-temperature derating curve

For operation above +85 °C, obtain the voltage derating curve, case or hot-spot limit and loaded-life data.

Control PET timing error

For timing, coupling and precision signal circuits, include dielectric absorption, capacitance and loss versus temperature and frequency, drift, aging and bias history in the error budget.

Control heat and lead stress during assembly

Do not use reflow soldering. Follow the soldering profile, keep forming stress away from the case seal, and validate cleaning, coating, vibration and thermal cycling.
