Selection guide

Start with the waveform and circuit position: MPB/CBB21B is not a safety capacitor, and no frequency or temperature limits are specified for its AC application voltages. Then select voltage and capacitance, and check dV/dt, current, self-heating, lifetime and dimensions for the selected part.

  1. Define circuit position and waveform

Exclude any position that requires an IEC 60384-14 X/Y capacitor. Define DC bias, AC ripple, frequency, duty cycle, polarity reversal, start-up and abnormal transients. The paired AC value is not a complete operating rating.

  2. Select voltage and capacitance

The series covers 10 nF–10 µF at 100/250/400/630 VDC, with AC application voltages up to 250 VAC. Other ratings, values, lead spacings and tolerances on request.

  3. Calculate pulse and current stress

Convert the waveform to dV/dt, Ipk = C·dV/dt, repetitive energy and RMS current. Request the dV/dt, K0, ESR, ESL, impedance, Irms and peak-current limits of the selected part.

  4. Check temperature rise and lifetime

Calculate dielectric and ESR losses and hot-spot rise at the actual spectrum and enclosure ambient. The climatic category is 40/100/21 while operation extends to +105 °C: request voltage, frequency and temperature derating, and dry-heat, pulse and humidity life data.

  5. Confirm construction and assembly

Match the part number to voltage, capacitance, tolerance, W/H/T, lead spacing, lead form, packing and soldering profile. Do not use reflow soldering; validate cleaning, coating, vibration and lead forming.

Design notes

AC-capable does not mean safety approved

The series has AC application voltages but is a non-safety product. Use an approved X or Y capacitor for across-the-line, line-to-earth or insulation-barrier positions.

Do not convert DC ratings to AC

The paired 63–250 VAC values still need waveform, frequency, harmonic, temperature and lifetime conditions. Do not derive AC ratings from DC ratings.

Calculate pulse current from the actual waveform

For an ideal capacitor, I = C·dV/dt. Calculate peak and RMS current from the actual edge, overshoot and repetition rate, then apply the dV/dt, K0, Ipk, Irms and temperature limits of the selected part.

S-correction is a pulse application

Scan frequency, peak voltage, repetitive pulse current, resonance and case temperature determine the stress. Qualify the part with the exact waveform.

Ratings outside the standard range

For voltages, capacitance values or lead spacings outside the standard range, request the part specification, drawing and qualification report. Do not extrapolate from the nearest listed value.

Control assembly and mechanical stress

Apply the PP/PE soldering limits to the actual construction and do not use reflow soldering. Support larger boxes, keep lead-forming stress away from the resin seal, and validate cleaning, coating, vibration and thermal cycling.
