Selection guide

Define the Y1 insulation position and the voltage code first. Then choose between the low-capacitance SL range and the Y5P/Y5U/Y5V dielectrics, calculate line-frequency leakage current, and check whether the ordered dielectric carries 1,500 VDC and Annex I grade IIIB.

  1. Confirm that Y1 is required

Map the capacitor to the line-to-earth or primary-to-secondary reinforced-insulation position in the end-equipment standard. Confirm mains voltage, overvoltage category, creepage, clearance and abnormal conditions.

  2. Choose the voltage and approval scope

SL is rated 250/400 VAC only. Y5P/Y5U/Y5V extend to 500 VAC, and designated constructions to 1,500 VDC. Select one certified voltage code; do not combine the highest values of different rows.

  3. Choose SL or a high-K dielectric

SL covers 10–82 pF, with its own climatic and flammability classes. SL part numbers and drawings on request.

  4. Check attenuation and leakage together

Calculate common-mode impedance and I = 2πfCV at maximum voltage, frequency and capacitance tolerance. Include effective-capacitance change over temperature and voltage where the filter margin is narrow.

  5. Confirm mechanics, humidity grade and process

Confirm disc dimensions, lead form, bulk or tape code, Annex I grade, soldering profile, storage rules and approvals for the final part number.

Design notes

SL values have separate ratings

SL parts (10–82 pF) are rated 250/400 VAC, with climatic category 25/125/21 and passive flammability class C.

1,500 VDC is high-K only

Annex H covers designated Y5P/Y5U/Y5V constructions, not the SL range. The 4 kVAC dielectric-strength rating does not replace a continuous DC approval.

Grade IIIB applies to Y5P/Y5U/Y5V only

The 1,000 h 85/85 grade applies to the high-K approval scope. SL has a different climatic and flammability classification, and no Annex I grade is specified for SL.

Leakage current and effective capacitance share the margin

Calculate line-frequency current at maximum C, f and V, then verify the temperature and voltage dependence of the chosen dielectric. The 4.7 nF maximum does not necessarily fit every touch-current budget.

Impulse and life-test data

Impulse waveform and repetitions, life-test voltage and duration, and post-test ΔC/DF/IR/withstand limits on request. Do not apply impulse or life-test values of other series to CD parts.

Soldering, storage and mechanical stress

Hand rework: 350 °C max., 3 s max., at least 2 mm from the coating. Store unopened parts for up to 12 months at ≤35 °C / ≤70% RH, away from corrosive gases. Form leads without loading the ceramic body.
