### Selection guide

Start with the insulation position: Class Y2 is a line-bypass class for basic or supplementary insulation where the equipment standard permits it. It does not replace Y1 in reinforced-insulation positions. Then define leakage current, certified AC voltage, capacitance and body size, impulse stress, humidity profile and assembly.

1. **Confirm that Y2 is permitted**
Use Y2 from line to protective earth or in a bypass position only when the insulation architecture and equipment standard permit basic or supplementary insulation. Use Y1 where reinforced insulation or the higher impulse class is required.
2. **Calculate leakage current first**
Use the capacitance including tolerance, the mains voltage and frequency to calculate line-frequency current. Include all Y capacitors and other leakage paths in the equipment limit.
3. **Match the AC voltage approval**
Select 250, 275, 300 or 350 VAC and the approval marks the end equipment needs.
4. **Separate the DC rating from the safety approval**
The series is rated 1,500 VDC at 85 °C and 1,000 VDC at 105 °C, but the VDE approval includes no Annex H DC approval. For DC applications, derating and lifetime data are available on request; the end-equipment safety basis must be established separately.
5. **Specify geometry, impulse data and assembly process**
Specify W/H/T, pitch, lead diameter and form and packing for each capacitance and voltage. Check the impulse test data, pitch code and soldering profile of the selected part, check PCB spacing and do not reflow-solder.

### Approvals & reliability

#### Approvals & qualifications

CQC, VDE/ENEC, IECEE CB and UL/cUL approvals cover MPY Y2 capacitors from 1 nF to 1.2 µF at 250–350 VAC. The approvals include neither DC use (Annex H) nor an Annex I humidity grade.

#### Reliability tests

Initial characteristics cover dissipation factor, insulation resistance and voltage proof. Impulse and self-ignition test sequences are specified.

| Test | Condition | Acceptance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Impulse test | 24 pulses · 9 s charge / 2 s discharge | Test voltage, circuit and post-test limits on request |
| Self-ignition test | U = UR · U1 = 5.0 kV · 20 discharges per sample · 5 s interval | Test energy and pass criteria on request |

### Design notes

#### Y2 does not provide reinforced insulation

Use Y2 for line-to-earth EMI suppression where basic or supplementary insulation is allowed. Reinforced primary-to-secondary barriers and higher impulse requirements need a Y1 capacitor with the corresponding approval.

#### Leakage current sets the usable capacitance

Higher Y capacitance improves common-mode attenuation but raises mains-frequency current. Sum every Y capacitor and leakage path at maximum voltage, frequency and tolerance, and check the total against the equipment limit.

#### DC ratings are not safety approvals

The DC ratings (1,500 VDC at 85 °C, 1,000 VDC at 105 °C) are STE application limits; the VDE approval includes no Annex H DC approval. Check waveform, ripple, temperature rise, derating, life and end-equipment insulation requirements for the selected part.

#### No THB rating

This series has no biased 85/85 humidity rating, and its VDE approval includes no humidity grade. For humid environments, select MPY/Y2-THB and design to its own ratings.

#### Spacing, assembly and failure path

Define PCB creepage and clearance and the lead form. Validate soldering, cleaning and coating; do not reflow-solder. Coordinate protective earthing, fusing and open- and short-circuit failure analysis.
