### Selection guide

Define the circuit position and the required insulation class before choosing capacitance or package. X1 and Y2 ratings cover different fault and impulse duties. Y2 is a basic-insulation class; do not use it where the end equipment requires Y1 reinforced insulation.

1. **Classify the circuit position**
Identify line-to-line, line-to-earth or isolation-barrier use from the end-equipment standard. Confirm that X1/Y2, and Y2 basic insulation in particular, is permitted at that position.
2. **Define voltage and impulse duty**
Include nominal mains voltage, repetitive peaks, switching overshoot and abnormal conditions. The 2.6 kVAC withstand is a test condition, not a continuous rating.
3. **Choose capacitance and dielectric**
1815 covers 10–2,200 pF and adds SL at low values; 2522 extends the range to 390–4,700 pF. Check the temperature characteristic of the dielectric before using nominal capacitance in EMI calculations.
4. **Choose 1815 or 2522**
Use the body and land dimensions in the variant table. Recalculate creepage and clearance on the finished PCB, including contamination, coating, conductive chassis parts and adjacent copper.
5. **Validate the assembly process**
Apply the MSL 3 floor-life rule, validate the reflow profile, and verify board flex, cleaning, coating and resin compatibility on the production assembly.

### Approvals & reliability

#### Approvals & qualifications

UL/cUL recognition covers the SMC X1/Y2 series. Approvals of the SMD X1/Y1 series do not apply to SMC parts.

| Agency | Standard | Certificate | Scope |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| UL UL / cUL | UL / CSA 60384-14 | E530201 | SMC X1/Y2, 10–4,700 pF, tolerance K (±10%) or M (±20%). |

Each certificate covers the types and ratings listed on it.

#### Reliability tests

Test conditions and limits for both packages. Endurance impulse preconditioning depends on the package: 8 kVDC for 1815, 5 kVDC for 2522. Impulse values are test conditions, not continuous ratings.

| Test | Condition | Acceptance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Damp heat, steady state | 40 ±2 °C · 90–95% RH · 500 ±12 h | No visible damage · ΔC ≤±15% · IR >5,000 MΩ · withstands 2.6 kVAC, 60 s |
| Damp heat with load | 40 ±2 °C · 90–95% RH · rated voltage · 500 ±12 h | No visible damage · ΔC ≤±15% · IR >5,000 MΩ · withstands 2.6 kVAC, 60 s |
| Endurance | Three impulses of 8 kVDC (1815) or 5 kVDC (2522), then 125 °C · 1.7 × UR · 1,000 h, raised to 1,000 VAC for 0.1 s every hour | No visible damage · ΔC within ±20% · IR >5,000 MΩ · withstands 2.6 kVAC, 60 s |
| Temperature cycling | −40 °C ↔ +125 °C · five cycles | No visible damage · ΔC within ±20% · IR >5,000 MΩ · withstands 2.6 kVAC, 60 s |
| Resistance to soldering heat | Solder 260 +5/−0 °C · 10 ±1 s · after preconditioning | No visible damage · ΔC within ±10% · withstands 2.6 kVAC, 60 s |
| Vibration, board bending and shear | 10–55–10 Hz · 1.5 mm · 6 h; bend test and 5 N shear test | No significant abnormality or terminal displacement; electrical drift within the specified limits |

### Design notes

#### Reflow and moisture handling

MSL 3. Store at ≤30 °C / 60% RH and use within six months of delivery. Complete soldering within 168 h after opening the bag. If storage time or floor life is exceeded, bake at 60 °C for 168 h. Reference reflow window: 230–260 °C for 10–30 s, preheat 170 °C max.

#### Y2 insulation class

Y2 is intended for basic or supplementary insulation under the applicable equipment standard. Do not replace a Y1 capacitor with SMC X1/Y2 because capacitance, footprint or nominal AC voltage appear to match.

#### Working voltage and self-heating

Keep all steady-state and transient voltage components within the rated voltage, and the capacitor surface below +125 °C. For the applicable high-permittivity dielectrics, limit temperature rise from dielectric loss to 20 °C at 25 °C ambient.

#### PCB land, flex and handling

Use the land pattern of the selected package. Do not load, tilt or move the body after soldering. Board flex, terminal misalignment and external shock can crack the ceramic element or the termination.

#### Cleaning, coating and potting

Validate cleaning agents, adhesives, conformal coatings and potting resins on the actual assembly. Organic solvents and mismatched curing or thermal expansion can damage the epoxy or the ceramic during temperature cycling.

#### Hipot testing and fail-safe design

Use a 50/60 Hz sinusoidal source, secure the terminals and ramp up from near zero. Do not return samples that have been hipot tested repeatedly to production stock. A damaged safety capacitor can fail short; provide fusing or another automatic protective function.
